This week’s tip: choose an environmentally-friendly Christmas tree option!
Christmas trees can be quite the conundrum for an environmentalist! Artificial trees are made of non-recyclable materials and contribute to a large amount of municipal plastic waste each year. Alternatively, cutting down a living tree can also be a huge waste of resources and animal habitats.
Here are some better options:
> If going with a living tree, choose a local tree farm with sustainable practices
> If buying artificial, choose a high quality tree that will last 10+ years
> Get a second hand tree from a thrift store or Christmas swap
> Decorate an already existing tree on your property
> Go for non-traditional! Decorate a houseplant
> Make an alternative tree out of recycled materials at home
> (My favourite option) Buy a living tree from your local nursery and plant it in your yard or community in the spring
