Welcome to Local Hippie’s weekly tip for living a greener life! Each week we will provide you with a quick tip to help you reduce your carbon footprint and change the world.
It’s that time of year – when fluffy yellow flowers (or some people prefer to call them weeds) start to take over our lawns. I personally choose to leave my dandelions as they serve as an excellent source of nutrition for bumble bees in the early spring.
BUT! If you are insistent on having that perfectly green grass, here’s an eco-friendly way to deal with dandelions. It’s a little more time consuming than spraying with chemicals, but much safer for you and the planet.
- Using a spade, dig deep and pull out the dandelion and its root.
- Carefully spray or pour standard white vinegar down the hole, being careful to not spill onto your grass as it will kill it.
Tip: If you have a lot of dandelions and some bored kids at home – put them to work! See who can collect the most dandelions. You can even have them pour the vinegar as it’s completely safe and chemical-free.
