By Rosalind Russell – Community partners and the City of Elliot Lake are hopeful they will receive funding approval for a new arts and culture hub to replace the Lester B. Pearson Civic Centre that had to be demolished due to a roof collapse.
Daniel Gagnon, the city CAO, says the city has applied to the Federal government’s Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Grant program for a net carbon zero arts centre, which is estimated to cost $27-million dollars.
He says the council’s plans include a performing arts theatre, museum, art gallery space and a Welcome Centre on the former site of the civic centre on Highway 108.
He says they want to hear from the public so a public consultation will be held on Tuesday, April 18th at 7 pm at Collins Hall with the city’s recreation and culture team providing a complete update.
Gagnon adds that while some details have been ironed out, a funding decision can take several months so fundraising efforts and other grant applications are also been organized.
