By Rosalind Russell – First Nation leaders from across Ontario will gather (gathered) on Manitoulin Island today for the funeral of a well-known advocate and former councillor.
Joseph “Joe” Clarence Endanawas passed away this past Saturday, March 25th at his home in Sudbury.
He had served in the U.S. Army before settling in Northern Ontario and served several terms as a former chief and council member of Sheshegwanning First Nation and the United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin as well as the government agency, Anishinabek Nation.
A respected elder, Endanawas was also a strong advocate for language preservation and received accolades in his role as a knowledge keeper.
He also had a varied career including stints in forestry and manufacturing.
His funeral service takes place today at 11 am at the Sheshegwanning Community Centre.
Endanawas was 79 years old.
