On March 31, grade 9 and 10 and students from École secondaire catholique La Renaissance (Espanola) took part in “Explore Construction Trades” activity. Offered through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP), this learning activity was held in the premises of the Carpenters’ Union in Azilda.
During this experiential learning activity, the grade 9 and 10 girls and boys had the opportunity to participate in a construction workshop. They were excited to have a hands-on experience in carpentry, drywall installation and plastering while learning about the tools and products needed for construction. This group of Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon students also learned related health and safety protocols.
The purpose of the experiential learning activity also seeks to demystify specialized trades and enable all students to learn about rewarding careers in this sector of the economy. Statistics reveal that women are under-represented in the construction, industrial, service, as well as the motive power sector. By participating in this type of activity, the CSC Nouvelon is seeking to raise the girls’ level of confidence while initiating them to non-traditional careers.
This activity follows a few other exploration construction trades days recently offered to grade 9 girls from CSC Nouvelon secondary schools in Greater Sudbury.
