By Rosalind Russell – Algoma Manitoulin Riding President Tim Vine introduced Nathaniel Erskine-Smith to the Espanola public this Sunday at a breakfast town hall held at the Espanola Legion.
Erskine-Smith is running for the Provincial Liberal Leader’s position.
He has held the federal riding of Beaches-East York since 2015 sharing some of his working career as a lawyer with the attendees.
He says everyone must stand for core values, such as health care, addiction, mental health, and affordable housing.
When asked what a renewal of the Liberal Party looks like, Erskine-Smith said that we need to get the younger generation active in politics.
He says back in 2015 he started out with a few friends, and it slowly grew to a group of 25 committed volunteers, and he wants to continue that initiative as part of a Grass Roots Volunteer Training Program.
He adds party members need to be “knocking on doors”, to find out what people are concerned about and not assume we know what they want.
Erskine-Smith stated that most people are concerned with environmental governance, economic development, downloading services to the municipalities and affordable housing.
He adds the party must build trust with constituents by letting their actions speak louder than words.
The party’s executive has set November 25th and 26th for members to cast their ranked ballots in their constituencies.
The winner will be announced on December 2nd.
Steven Del Duca stepped down as leader following his failure to win a seat in the June 2022 provincial election.
