Cameco donates $48,000 to Alzheimer’s

By Rosalind Russell – Blind River’s Cameco refinery and its employees donated last week in advance of the Alzheimer Walk set for late this month.

Refinery General Manager, Terry Davis, says they donated thousands of dollars to the Alzheimer Society Blind River Adult Day Program as part of the Cameco Giving Campaign.

He adds the company matched the employee’s donation of $24,000 doubling the donation to $48,000.

He adds since 2005, the employees have supported 18 area projects.

Davis also noted the annual local Alzheimer Walk is set for May 28th.

Attending the donation ceremony was Terry Caporossi, Executive Director from the Alzheimer Society of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District, Helga Moore and Samantha Ralph, the Adult Day Program Coordinators whoaccepted the cheque from Cameco and were pleased that the local Adult Day Program was selected for the Employee Giving Campaign this year.

Walk Where You Are, In Your Own Way – in the month of May in Blind River or Elliot Lake.

Both walks take place May 28th, which is a Sunday. Hiking, biking, and walking your dog are just a few ideas.

How many steps will you take to support people living with dementia? Consider walking a minimum of 3,328 steps a day in the month of May which represents the number of people living with dementia in the Algoma District.

Share your pics on social media and tag us so that we can show the community how you are participating, and use the hashtag #IGWalkforAlz Funds raised support local services that improve the quality of life of local people living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

In Blind River, call Helga Moore at 705-227-1241 to make arrangements to return any pledge forms on or before Tuesday, May 30th, 2023 from 9 am-4 pm at the Calvary Gospel Church to be eligible for Top Individual and Top Team prizes.

In Elliot Lake, take part at the Elliot Lake Secondary School- In person walk at 303 Missisauga Avenue.

Registration is at 12 noon with the Walk Start at 1:00 pm.

If you are not comfortable attending the walk in-person you can still Walk Where You Are, In Your Own Way, but please contact Samantha at 705-848-8145 at the local office at 9 Oakland Blvd. to make arrangements to return your pledge form and donations before Sunday, May 28th for you to be eligible for the top individual or top team prize.
