Bush fire near Birch Island temporarily closes Highway Six

By Rosalind Russell – There is not much new information available in regards to a fire in the Birch Island area, which started in the early afternoon yesterday.

OPP closed off Highway Six for a time yesterday due to heavy smoke just south of the community of Whitefish River.

A detour was also put in place for a short while with Highway 17 reopening at around 4:30 pm.

Hydro as out for a short while across most of Manitoulin Island and along the Highway Six corridor due to the fire, but was restored around five pm.

Some social media sources say the fire was started by a tree falling on a live hydro line, but that has not been confirmed.

The community administration extended a thank you to its fire services and support for assistance with the blaze.
