By Rosalind Russell – The Anishinabek Nation Chiefs-in-Assembly have unanimously passed a resolution rejecting the Métis Self-Government Recognition and Implementation Agreement between the Métis Nation of Ontario and Canada in its current form.
Anishinabek Nation Grand Council Chief Reg Niganobe says the assembly states there is a need for transparency in determining Métis Community, citizenship, and Aboriginal rights.
He adds Canada needs to cease further implementation of the Métis Agreement since the Assembly sees it as an impediment to their sovereignty and jurisdiction.
Niganobe emphasizes they cannot allow for unilateral decision-making to erode their sovereign, inherent and Treaty rights, and traditional territories.
The adds all 39 Anishinabek First Nations continue to assert that they are the only holders of inherent rights and jurisdiction over their traditional and treaty territories.
