By Rosalind Russell – A 10-billion-dollar proposed settlement has been reached involving the Robinson Huron Treaty annuities case. Robinson Huron Treaty Leadership, the governments of Ontario and Canada announced the agreement and next steps on Saturday. 21 First Nations are involved, including all the First Nation communities along the North Shore corridor and Manitoulin Island.
Batchewana First Nation Chief Dean Sayers says with the proposed settlement they’re now moving forward together on the path of reconciliation.
Each of the 21 First Nations will be receiving a portion of the compensation for past losses – with some to be set aside for community development. There will also be an individual component to the annuity.
