By Rosalind Russell – Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory had plans to celebrate Indigenous People’s Day with a festive community gathering, but now the focus will be on healing.
Following the shooting this past weekend where two people died and a third is in hospital, the Wiikwemkoong Tourism office says the celebration at Thunderbird Park will focus on healing for community members.
It is a closed gathering, so the public is asked not to attend since the focus will be on the residents and will include a powwow with healing dances and prayers, and a community feast.
They add a Sacred Fire was lit early Monday morning and will continue burning for the next few days.
