By Rosalind Russell – Residents across the three districts of Algoma, Manitoulin and Sudbury have been contending with an air quality advisory over the last few days.
Environment Canada says the fires burning across Quebec and northeastern Ontario have caused a heavy blanketing effect across most of the North sometimes so heavy, the coverage is like heavy fog.
People from Espanola to Elliot Lake, across the North Shore and Manitoulin Island, have been dealing with the heavy smoke over the last 24 hours.
Environment Canada is advising the public to stay indoors if possible or wear a mask while outdoors.
The agency will provide an update if the situation changes.
There were 28 active fires in the northeast as of Sunday afternoon.
Two of the four new fires reported June 24th, Saturday, were in the Cochrane district. Cochrane 19 is nine hectares and is located three kilometres northeast of Chabbie Lake. Cochrane 18 is 6.1 hectares and located southeast of Little Wakwayowkastic Lake. Neither of the blazes is under control.
