Manitoulin Secondary School receiving new high-tech machine equipment

Manitoulin Secondary School is the latest in the Rainbow District School Board to receive new high-tech machine equipment from the Canadian Tooling & Machining Association (CTMA) and Ontario Council for Technology Education (OCTE).

Approximately $80,000 has been allocated for the purchase of a CNC milling machine, two CNC routers and a 3VM Ram Turret milling machine.

In addition to the technology enhancements at Manitoulin Secondary School, another $50,000 is being provided to Lively District Secondary School for ongoing upgrades, including a CNC milling machine and CNC lathe.

Both schools will also receive a tooling package valued at $7,000 each.

Rainbow District School Board is currently carrying out preliminary work to prepare for the arrival and installation of the new equipment this fall.

The funding will help address the skilled trades gap in the Machine, Tool, Die & Mold sector. This sector serves many industries including, but not limited to, automotive, aerospace, packaging, medical, energy, military defense and others.

“The Canadian Tooling & Machining Association and Ontario Council for Technology Education are giving more students and teachers in Rainbow Schools access to modern equipment to learn skills and gain competencies that are in high demand,” says Bruce Bourget, Director of Education for Rainbow District school Board.

He adds: “The new equipment at Manitoulin Secondary School and Lively District Secondary School will ensure that students have even more opportunities to consider the trades as viable career paths. We thank the CTMA and the OCTE for their ongoing support.”

Close to $162,000 in equipment was installed at Lively District Secondary School and Lasalle Secondary School earlier this spring. Lively District Secondary School received desktop CNC machines and a milling machine to provide relevant precision metal working experiences to students. New desktop CNC machines, plasma tables and a milling machine were added to the trades classrooms at Lasalle Secondary School.
 
The new equipment is part of the Career-Ready with CTMA: Expanding Opportunities program funded in part by the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario.

Another component of the program will provide experiential work placements for high school co-op students, with a focus in the precision metal cutting sector. Participants will work alongside experienced tradespeople, skilled workers and other professionals who will provide them with an opportunity to gain real world skills and knowledge.
