Haweater Weekend kicks off today

By Rosalind Russell – The stars of the HGTV show Carver Kings are in Little Current as the opening act of Haweater 2023, a weekend of celebrating everything Manitoulin Island.

The Little Current Lions Club heads up the annual event, which attracts thousands of people from throughout the North coming home to celebrate homecoming.

People born on Manitoulin Island are commonly called Haweaters after the haw berry trees that grow berries in the summer months.

The first Haweater Weekend was held in 1967 as a Centennial event and was the vision of then Lions Club President Doug Tracey.

The weekend includes a fishing derby, baseball tournament, soap box derby, parade and tons of activities, vendors and food stands along the docks and on Low Island.
