By Rosalind Russell – Elliot Lake’s Centennial Arena is closed to the public for the foreseeable future.
Acting Mayor Andrew Wannan shared the news yesterday afternoon.
He says the difficult decision was made because it isn’t safe to continue using the arena, for the time being.
That decision comes after an inspection of the arena that took place on Monday, Sept. 11.
Wannan says engineers shared a closer and more extensive examination of the wood structure is needed, adding staff has asked consultants to provide a plan to continue the investigation, and further details are expected in the coming weeks.
Wannan says all programming, including hockey, figure, and public skating, as well as private rentals have been postponed.
Starting today, the Vikings will hold practices in Blind River and Massey.
Their home game on September 22nd vs Espanola will be played in Espanola and after that on September 29th in Blind River versus the Soo Thunderbirds.
The team thanks the public for their patience and support.
The town says all programming, including hockey, figure, and public skating, as well as private rentals have been postponed:
This includes Hockey, Figure Skating, Public Skating, In-house Programming, and any private rentals.
Centennial Arena will only be accessible to staff, and only while wearing appropriate protective equipment.
The city will be planning for any necessary sports equipment that is currently stored at the arena to be picked up under safe conditions.
