By Rosalind Russell – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says electing the first Black Canadian as Speaker of the House of Commons should be inspiring to all Canadians.
Liberal MP Greg Fergus was elected to the position in Ottawa today and was chosen from a field of seven candidates.
The position became open after Anthony Rota resigned last week following his request for MPs to honour a man who it was later revealed fought for the Nazis.
Rota apologized saying he wasn’t aware of that fact when he asked for the recognition during a visit to parliament by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
AMK MP Carol Hughes failed in her bid to fill the seat.
She will continue in her role as Deputy Speaker.
