RCMP launches investigation into Greenbelt scandal

By Rosalind Russell – The RCMP has launched a criminal investigation into the Greenbelt scandal.

The national police forces’ sensitive and internal investigations team is probing the case.

Because it is an active investigation the RCMP says no further information will be released.

The OPP referred the case to the RCMP last month.

The probe comes after Premier Doug Ford allowed development on 74 hundred acres of the environmentally protected area but backed down on the deal after pressure mounted when both the provincial auditor general and integrity commissioner found that certain developers received preferential treatment in the almost 9-billion-dollar deal.

Ford says his government will cooperate with any investigation and has zero tolerance for any wrongdoing.

NDP leader Marit Stiles says it is “absolutely shameful” the province under Premier Ford’s leadership have acted so improperly the RCMP is compelled to launch an investigation.
