Elliot Lake’s Homeless Challenge deemed a success

By Rosalind Russell – Larry’s Place Fresh Start Homelessness Challenge 2023 wrapped up in the parking lot in front of George’s Restaurant last weekend after several local supporters spent nearly a week in cardboard boxes and tents.

Staff from Larry’s Place, the local men’s shelter, spent several nights living the life of a homeless person.

Team lead, former mayor Dan Marchisella, says sleeping on a bed made from pallets and cardboard is super painful and it
is impossible to get comfortable, to get warm, and is not the way any person should have to live.

He admits he does not have all the answers, but people simply helping people goes a long way, adding no one is homeless by choice.

He says some 400 people stopped by all week to make donations and to find out how they can continue to help the homeless.
