By Rosalind Russell – Espanola council has been in discussions with the Ontario Provincial Police over the last year about building a new detachment to serve the Espanola and North Shore Corridor.
Officials say the present facility on Highway 17 is outdated, does not meet current standards and the property itself is too small for the new design that include office space, cells, storage, garage(s), parking facilities and more.
The Town is considering donating a property at their light industrial park on Panache Lake Road, but it must meet certain specifications required by the OPP, which requires a thorough review that could take up to six months to complete.
Espanola council will discuss the matter at their meeting this week and if they agree with the donation, the work on the review will begin.
