Rainbow District School Board will host its 17th annual Technological Skills Competition on Wednesday, February 28, 2024. The event will take place at Cambrian College in Sudbury and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local 2486 in Azilda.
Some 150 secondary students will test their skills in 2D and 3D character animation, AutoCAD, auto-service technology, cabinetmaking, carpentry, coding, electrical installations, home and team building, heavy duty equipment, mechanical CAD, photography, prepared speech, small powered engines, tv/video production, welding, workplace safety and VEX robotics.
New this year is an elementary component that will see 160 students from Grades 7 and 8 competing in five categories including character animation, construction, LEGO® Mechanical Engineering, LEGO® Robotics, and tv/video production.
Students will vie for an opportunity to compete at the Skills Ontario Competition on May 4 and 5, 2024 in Toronto.
“Tech Skills gives students an opportunity to showcase their talents in various sectors, which could lead to potential careers in the trades,” says Jennifer Burns, Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Co-ordinator with Rainbow District School Board. “Students make connections with community partners and engage in innovative learning experiences that foster self-confidence, problem-solving and creativity. Participation also fuels their passion for the trades.”
Carpentry competitions, including Home and Team Building and Carpentry – Team of 2, will take place at the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local 2486 in Azilda.
Staff will provide judges at both venues.
Participants will have an opportunity to take home medals and certificates of achievement to celebrate their success. The awards ceremony will begin at 3 pm at both locations. Parents/guardians are welcome to attend.
Rainbow District School Board salutes the many staff members who work diligently to make this event possible every year and thanks Cambrian College and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local 2486 for their support.
The Board also acknowledges the generosity of community partners who contribute financially for the local competitions and provide new tools and transportation for students to compete at the Skills Ontario Competition.
