Skate-a-thon raises thousands for Sick Kids

By Rosalind Russell – The Espanola Regional Recreation Complex was the place to be on Saturday with sunny skies, fairly warm temperatures, and plenty of family activities to raise funds for Toronto Sick Kids Hospital.

Alex and Kelsey McKechnie’s little girl, Iris Mae, was diagnosed with Pompe Disease, a genetic anomaly shortly after her birth two and a half years ago.

She was diagnosed at Sick Kids and since there is no cure, she receives weekly life-saving infusions at Health Sciences North in Sudbury.

Although all the numbers have yet to come in, approximately $45,000 has been raised all proceeds going towards research through Sick Kids Rare Disease Research.

The McKechnie’s thank everyone for their continued support in finding a cure, not only for their daughter, but other rare childhood diseases.
