Cambrian College and Rainbow District School Board host local skills competition

By Rosalind Russell – Every year, Team Sudbury travels to Toronto to compete in Skills Ontario with this year’s competition beginning February 28th in Sudbury.

Alison Caruso, Cambrian’s manager of student recruitment, says Cambrian College and Rainbow District School Board will host the local skills event at Cambrian’s main campus with more than 300 students competing in over 20 categories from animation to welding.

She says it is the sixth year of partnership for local skills competition that not only cultivates community but also nurtures mentorship and competition readiness for Skills Ontario.

Caruso says winners of each event in the local skills competition will join Team Sudbury, which will compete at Skills Ontario May 6-8 in Toronto, which will be comprised of students from Cambrian College and College Boréal, as well as students from the four local school boards.

She says a further win at Skills Canada could lead to the World Skills Competition.

They were selected by Mr. Keresztesi to represent the school thanks to their strengths in problem solving, carpentry skills and positive attitudes. They were challenged to frame an outhouse from floor to roof in one day and successfully managed to do so, thereby punching their ticket to the Homebuilding competition taking place on Wednesday the 28th.
