By Rosalind Russell – Elliot Lake’s Fire Chief is not stating definitively that batteries caused the fire at the landfill last week, but he does say they pose a fire risk.
In a press release, Chief John Thomas reminds everyone that disposing of rechargeable batteries in regular garbage poses a fire risk.
He says batteries that end up in the landfill may lead to fires like the one experienced last week.
Thomas asks the public to hold on to their batteries and dispose of them properly by dropping them off at the Municipal Hazardous Waste Day, which is usually held once a year.
