By Rosalind Russell – Taxpayers who are the municipal water and sewer systems in Espanola will see increases this year.
CAO Joseph Burke says the increase is needed due to the ongoing upgrades of the hard services in town.
He says municipal water and sewer systems and facilities are funded separately from the municipal operating and capital budgets.
Water and sewer rates are failing to generate enough revenue to cover the cost of the system due to significant operation increases with current water and sewer rates leaving a 20% shortfall with projected annual expenses.
Residential taxpayers who pay a monthly bill of $101.91 cents will see an increase of $10.19 cents starting in May and another increase of $10.19 in January of 2025.
The increases also follow major capital expenditures on the new trunk line and sewage plant upgrades.
