Photos and article by Grant Lewis – Who knew that the lowly mushroom could be so vital to our health and well being.At mya recent meeting of the Espanola Gardeners, Shane O’Donnell and Cynthia McNichol, pictured below, certainly convinced the group of about forty people otherwise.
Healthy and delicious……perhaps not so lowly. Shane outlined how mushrooms starti out as a simple spore to become an object with a huge cap,measuring over a foot in diameter. And in language that was understood by all! The science of growing mushrooms can be scientifically overpowering,but Shane made the whole process easy to understand. His style was informal, interesting, and humorous.
Shane and Cynthia have operated Heartwood Mushrooms in Little Current for years and now sell kits, mushroom spice, growing medium, well “everything mushroom”. All were made available for sale at the end of his presentation.
The Espanola Gardeners are looking forward to a return trip to see Heartwood Mushrooms in action!!!
