Investigation focused on fire at ceremonial site on Manitoulin Island

By Rosalind Russell – Firefighters on Manitoulin Island were called out early yesterday morning to battle a fire in Sheguiandah First Nation on Manitoulin Island.

The fire destroyed the Sheguiandah Roundhouse and Community Centre, an important centre of activities for the First Nation, including Sacred Fires and Pow Wows.

Duane Deschamps, chief of the Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands Fire Department, says firefighters gained control of the blaze around 5:30 am and the scene was cleared some three hours later.

Deschamps adds there were no injuries.

United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin Anishinaabe Police Staff Sargeant Brad Mack says the service is investigating the fire with the assistance of the OPP, but no cause has been determined as of press time.

The investigation continues.
