Unemployment rate is up

By Rosalind Russell – Over 20,000 jobs were added but Canada’s unemployment rate still went up in May.

Statistics Canada says the rate is now at 6.2 per cent, up slightly from 6.1 per cent from the month before.

StatsCan says our country’s population was growing at a faster pace than employers were adding jobs.

The health care, finance and real estate sectors saw gains while losses were seen in areas including construction and transportation.

According to StatsCan, the average Canadian employee made $34.94 per hour last month, an increase of $1.69 over last year.
