From Sudbury to Paris – former Sudbury student off to the Olympics

By Rosalind Russell -Looking for someone to cheer on at this summer’s Olympic games?

You don’t have to look too far.

The Rainbow District School Board joins with the wider community in congratulating basketball star Syla Swords who will compete at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games this summer.

In being selected for the Senior Women’s National Basketball Team, the former Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School student from Sudbury made history since she is only 18, the youngest-ever female basketball player to represent Canada at the games.

Syla follows in her parents’ footsteps with her father Shawn a former member of the men’s basketball team that competed at the Olympics in Sydney in 2000.

Her mother Shelley was also a stand-out member of the Laurentian University Voyageurs Basketball Team.
