By Rosalind Russell – There will be a joint Emergency Council Meeting of the Councils of the Township of Nairn and Hyman and the Township of Baldwin this coming Monday about the transport of radioactive materials to a site in the Agnew Lake area.
Nairn & Hyman Township CAO, Clerk Treasurer Belinda Ketchabaw says the two townships recently learned that the Ministry of Mines and the Ministry of Transportation made the decision to transport naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) from the former Beaucage Mine and Nipissing First Nation to be deposited at the Agnew Lake Tailings Management Area (ALTMA) in Nairn and Hyman Township.
She says the decision has far-reaching implications for the environment, public health, and safety of our communities, and the decision was made without any consultation with the municipality or the others bordering Agnew Lake.
She says a letter has been sent out to both ministries with no response.
The joint councils will meet on Monday at 2 pm at the Nairn Community Centre to discuss next steps.
