By Rosalind Russell – Some 50 people took in an emergency meeting of the councils of Baldwin and Nairn & Hyman townships Monday afternoon calling on governments to halt the transportation of any low-grade radioactive material to the Agnew Lake Area.
Nairn & Hyman Deputy Mayor Trevor McVey says there was no consultation about transporting the material, called NORM, from Nipissing First Nation to the former Agnew Lake Mine site, which is now owned by the government.
Emergency motions were passed by both municipalities calling for a halt on transporting the material until there is public consultation and studies completed on the possible impact to the water table and the possible long-term environmental affect.
McVey says the government wants to transport some 1,300 loads of the low-level contaminant to the site.
There is also a petition being launched, which will be available at the township offices and local businesses to sign which will then be sent to the province.
Local government figures, including MPP Mike Mantha, MPs Carol Hughes and Marc Serre, all agree public consultations should have been held before any approvals for transportation were given.
