New law on consumption sites forces several closures

By Rosalind Russell – The Canadian Public Health Association says each of the ten supervised consumption sites slated for closure in Ontario has saved hundreds of lives.

The Ford government announced Tuesday that it is banning any supervised drug consumption sites within 200 metres of any school or child-care centre in order to protect the safety of children and communities.

That means ten of the 19 sites now operating in the province will close.

CPHA officials say those sites have provided interventions after clients consumed tainted drugs.

They add that the decision to close them will have immediate devastating consequences for vulnerable populations across Ontario.
