Rail strike goes to arbitration

By Rosalind Russell – The federal government has forced the ongoing labour dispute between some 93 hundred workers and C-N and C-P-K-C to arbitration.  Federal Minister of Labour Steve Mackinnon announced yesterday (Thurs) that the two sides will be forced to sit down to hash out their differences.  This as warnings from business and industry officials across the country rang out, worried that an extended strike would cripple the Canadian economy. Despite the two sides being forced into arbitration, there are no guarantees that an agreement will be signed anytime soon. Along with commuter chaos in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, it’s estimated the work stoppage is blocking about $1 billion in goods from moving across the country.
