By Rosalind Russell – Around 80 people took in a special gathering last week that offered a different historical perspective of Elliot Lake well before the opening of the mines.
Isaac Murdoch of Serpent River First Nation made the presentation in Elliot Lake at the Moose Family Centre last Thursday evening sharing the Indigenous history of the area.
Using traditional oral storytelling and historical archives, Murdoch wove pre-modern Anishinabek understanding and modern history into the presentation as well as sharing historical artifacts.
One story Murdoch told is of an extensive tunnel system extending for many kilometres to places such as Rooster Rock, Elliot Lake, Depot Lake and further south where the Anishinabe believed the ‘great serpents’ lived.
He also talked about the prophecies of the white man arriving in their land, as well as battles between different tribes.
Murdoch says he has plans to continue making presentations to ensure that the Indigenous history is shared, especially with the younger generation.
