By Rosalind Russell – The Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse and Addiction is calling it a first-of-its-kind initiative. Officials say the Timmins Summit will bring together elected leaders of small to mid-sized municipalities, along with public health officials, drug policy experts, service providers and more to begin developing the first municipally led, integrated standards for treatment, harm reduction, recovery, prevention and enforcement services.
The Centre says in the last 8 years, over 40,000 people in Canada have died due to apparent opioid toxicity.
Officials add the summit, which is happening this week in Timmins, is only the beginning, with the hope of unlocking vital government support, providing municipal leaders with a consolidated range of options and more.
