By Rosalind Russell – Students at Espanola High School will be collecting pledges and donations for the annual Terry Fox Run.
According to the release, this year’s event will be held on Thursday, September 26th at 12:40 pm.
The Terry Fox Foundation states Fox was diagnosed with cancer in 1979 and had his leg amputated, but that did not stop him from his goal to raise funds for cancer research.
He dipped his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean on April 12th, 1980, and began his run west to the Pacific.
However, cancer returned in his lungs, and he was forced to stop on September 1st, 1980, in Thunder Bay after having run 5,373 kilometres.
Before his death on June 28, 1981, Terry had achieved his goal of $1 from every Canadian and the run has now expanded around the world and runs are held around the globe to continue his initiative.
