By Rosalind Russell – The Ombudsman of Ontario, Paul Dubé, will be issuing his findings about Elliot Lake council and how it deals with information that should be released in open, rather than closed sessions.
He says he launched his investigation in May of the city’s Finance and Administration Committee December 18th, 2023, meeting, following a complaint to his office.
He told the city about the investigation, and they cooperated fully.
Dubé says the complaint was valid where he found the meeting did not fit within any of the Municipal Act’s closed meeting exceptions and should have been an open, public meeting.
He says a discussion of policies to educate the members with new information should have been held in the open.
At the time, the city said publicly it would be conducting the meeting in closed session because it was a training session, but Dubé found a presentation by the Special Projects Manager focusing on the municipality’s draft procurement by-law should have been public.
His findings will be discussed at tonight’s meeting at 7pm.
