Vacant school sustains heavy fire damage

By Rosalind Russell – The Elliot Lake Fire Department is continuing its investigation into a fire that destroyed a vacant school in the city.

Fire Chief John Thomas says the Elliot Lake Fire Department received a call shortly after 10:00 Tuesday night at the former Roman Avenue School adding it took nearly 12 hours to put it out.

He says there is heavy damage to the site and the estimated damage is unknown.

The school had been vacant since 2016 and was recently rezoned by the city to allow for the building of some 50 apartments, another 50 on the former track and field and 40 townhouse units on the seven-acre property.

It is not known how the fire will affect the housing project.

Anyone with information regarding the fire should immediately contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122 or their nearest police authority.

Should you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or submit information online.
