By Rosalind Russell – Over 100 people attended the unveiling of the Espanola Elks Honour Wall last night.
The wall marks the contributions of supporters and businesses as well as former and present members of the Elks and the former Order of the Royal Purple.
Special guests John Metcalf, the 1st Vice-President of the Ontario Elks Association and Rev Jason Belanger, the Chaplain for Ontario were joined by Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Mike Mantha and Espanola Mayor Doug Gervais in sharing congratulatory messages with the members praising their dedication and volunteerism.
The wall was unveiled by two Elk members, Chuck Trahan who suggested the project over a year ago and Beth McVey who led the fundraising campaign following a dedication prayer by Belanger.
The funds raised went towards repairs of the Elks Hall including painting the hall and refurbishing the hardwood dance floor.
The Elks also acknowledged the donation of a cotton candy machine the Beaudry family donated in memory of the late Ron Beaudry.
A special moment was commemorative photos of some of the former members of the Royal Purple, one of whom is 93 years old, and a photo of the current members of the Elks.
Donors were also included on the wall including the Espanola Lions Club, the Town of Espanola, Home Hardware and the Moose 99.3 FM – CJJM Espanola – VISTA Radio.
There is still room for more plaques for anyone who would like a purchase a plaque.
Contact the hall or private message Beth McVey on Facebook.
