Monument will mark the Super stack demise in Sudbury

By Rosalind Russell – Vale Base Metals says it will be building a monument to its Vale Base Metals Super stack, following feedback from the Sudbury community.

The company says it reached out to the wider community in September for input on how they wanted to mark the historical icon.

Officials say over 5,000 votes were cast in favour of a monument.

The nickel miner says it will now work on the next stage of the project, “with a commitment to honouring the super stack’s historical significance to the community in a unique and creative way.”

The super stack and the smaller copper stack at Vale’s Copper Cliff Smelter Complex were decommissioned in 2020.

Vale says work on the copper stack has started with the dismantling expected to be completed by next year.

Work will then begin on the super stack and is expected to take up to four years to complete.
