By Grant Lewis – Many years ago, Paul Kallioinen approached the Lions Club with the idea of a Pond Hockey program for Espanola. Needless to say the club jumped on board and have supported the idea ever since.
What a wonderful way to introduce kids to the skills, discipline and fun of playing hockey. The program is a combination of skill instruction and actual games. Many kids this year, 32 in fact, along with seven or eight volunteers lace up on Sundays from 4:30 to 5:30 for an hour of fun and games.
It all ends with a banquet with awards, medals, pizza, and cake. The program runs from October to March. Rising costs mainly insurance pose a problem so the Lions Club is delighted to help out more and more!!
On hand to receive a cheque for $2,500 are Dave Bousquet, volunteers, and of course the kids.
