Rainbow Schools mark Remembrance Day 2024

Photos – In honour of remembrance, original documents from the second World War including letters from soldiers, a school newsletter, photographs and news clippings are on display in the library at Sudbury Secondary School. A special binder was created in memory of alumni who lost their lives. The display also includes an original painting by Arts Education graduate Amon Ranger of a local veteran and Eagle Staff Carrier Corporal Jason Nakogee.

 

All Rainbow Schools will observe Remembrance Day in the lead up to Monday, November 11, 2024. Activities and lessons will highlight the significance of the day.

Flags will fly at half-mast at Rainbow Schools in Sudbury, Espanola and Manitoulin Island from Friday, November 8, 2024 to mark Indigenous Veterans Day, throughout the weekend and day of remembrance.

A.B. Ellis Public School
Staff and students from A.B. Ellis Public School will join the Espanola High School community for a Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 8th from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm. This important event will mark the sacrifice our veterans, past and present, have made to secure our freedom and democracy.

Alexander Public School
Staff and students from Alexander Public School will commemorate Remembrance Day with a bilingual ceremony on Monday, November 11th at 10 am. The ceremony will include poetry readings, the laying of wreaths by classes, and a moment of silence. Students will also take part in meaningful conversations about the significance of the day to honour the courage and devotion of the brave men and women who served their country. Poppy donations will be accepted for the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #564. All are welcome to attend.

Assiginack Public School
Assiginack Public School will host a Remembrance Day assembly with community guests and veterans. The service will include contributions from students including artwork, songs and a video tribute. Following the ceremony, the school choir will perform at a community service at the Assiginack Cenotaph.

C.R. Judd Public School
Leading up to Remembrance Day, students from C.R. Judd Public School will engage in activities and discussions about Remembrance Day and the sacrifice our veterans, past and present, have made to secure our freedom and democracy. Students will mark Remembrance Day with a student-led ceremony on Friday, November 8th at 10:45 am. A delegate from the Capreol Royal Canadian Legion Branch #179 will be in attendance. The ceremony will feature student poems, songs and art. Parents/guardians are welcome to attend. On Monday, November 11th, intermediate students will attend a ceremony of remembrance at the Capreol Cenotaph.

Charles C. McLean Public School
Charles C. McLean Public School students in Grades 2 to 8 will attend a community Remembrance Day service at the Cenotaph with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #514. The school choir will lead “O Canada” and “God Save the King”, and the Grade 2 class will sing “Where Have All the Flowers Gone”. Two students will lay wreaths on behalf of the school.

Chelmsford Valley District Composite School
Chelmsford Valley District Composite School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony to honor the courage and sacrifice of those who served our country in the armed forces. On Monday, November 11th at 10:30 am, students, staff, and families will gather in the school gym to reflect on the profound impact of war and the importance of peace. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #553 will also be in attendance. The ceremony will feature readings, music, and personal tributes, and will culminate with a moment of silence. All are welcome.

Little Current Public School
Little Current Public School students will engage in activities and discussions about Remembrance Day, and the sacrifice our veterans, past and present, have made to secure our freedom and democracy. The school will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Monday, November 11th at 10 am in the school gym. A delegate from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #177 will be in attendance. Classes will display art in the gym in memory of those who served our country. Community members are welcome to attend.

Lively District Secondary School
On Monday, November 11th, staff and students from Lively District Secondary School will take part in “Learning to Remember”. The formal ceremony will include an annual edition of the Lively District Secondary School “Memory Project”. As part of this ongoing initiative, students narrate the stories of their family members who have served our country. Through music, videos and readings, staff and students will commemorate the many sacrifices and experiences of those who have bravely served. Parents and guardians are welcome to attend.

Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School
A school-wide Remembrance Day ceremony was held at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School on Thursday, November 7th in collaboration with members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #564. The event commemorated the many sacrifices of the men and women who fought bravely to serve and protect our country.

Lockerby Composite School
Each year, staff and students of Lockerby Composite School collect artifacts and mementos of someone who served in a 20th century conflict with a connection to the school. All items are on display in the school’s main foyer as a symbol of remembrance. The entire school will mark Remembrance Day with readings, the playing of “The Last Post”, “Reveille” and “O Canada” before 11 am on Monday, November 11th.

MacLeod Public School
MacLeod Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Monday, November 11th at 10:30 am in the gym. Families and members of the community are welcome to pay tribute, honour and thank the men and women who served Canada in times of war, military conflict and peace.

Manitoulin Secondary School
Manitoulin Secondary School students will honour all those who served with two minutes of silence, which will include a recording of the administration team laying wreaths with Navy Cadets at the school’s outdoor memorial. The memorial, which honours Indigenous Veterans of Manitoulin, has stood since May 16, 2011, with the words “May Peace Prevail” serving as a reminder of the collective commitment and hope for the future.

Markstay Public School
Markstay Public School will host a school-wide Remembrance Day ceremony on Monday, November 11th. Students will share songs, readings, poems and art. “The Last Post” will be played followed by a moment of silence. Grade 7/8 students will attend a Remembrance Day observance at Markstay Memorial Park. Students will lay a wreath and will perform a reading of “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae.

Monetville Public School
Students from Monetville Public School will attend a Remembrance Day ceremony at the Fire Hall in French River organized by the Royal Canadian Legion. A Grade 8 student will recite “In Flanders Fields”. Two students will also lay a wreath on the Wall of Remembrance with a video tribute to honour local veterans from the area.

Queen Elizabeth II Public School
Students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 at Queen Elizabeth II Public School will take part in a school-wide Remembrance Day assembly in the gym on Monday, November 11th. This important event will commemorate the sacrifice our veterans, past and present, have made to secure our freedom and democracy.

R.H. Murray Public School
Staff and students at R.H. Murray Public School will commemorate Remembrance Day on Monday November 11th, with a school-wide ceremony at 11:45 am in the gym. The service will include a musical performance, poetry readings, the laying of wreaths and videos. Members of the community are welcome to attend.

R.L. Beattie Public School
Staff and students of R.L. Beattie Public School will participate in a school-wide Remembrance Day ceremony on Monday, November 11th. Students will read poetry and lay wreaths, and the choir will sing. Students brought in photos of family members who have or are currently serving to create a meaningful video presentation for the ceremony.

Redwood Acres Public School
Redwood Acres Public School will honour the sacrifices of Canadians during a Remembrance Day ceremony on Monday, November 11th in the school gym. Students will decorate the gym for the service, which will be led by two Grade 6 students. Classes will sing “O Canada” and recite “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae. All classes will lay wreaths. The ceremony will conclude with a moment of silence at 11 am to commemorate the end of World War I and the many lives lost in war and times of conflict.

Sudbury Secondary School
Sudbury Secondary School students in many classes will learn about Indigenous perspectives for Remembrance Day. Students will watch the National Remembrance Day Assembly livestream in the Sheridan Auditorium. Some classes will also attend the municipal service at the Sudbury Arena. Students in Kindergarten to Grade 8 from Valley View Public School will gather in the gym for a Remembrance Day assembly on Monday, November 11th. This sombre event will commemorate the sacrifice made by veterans, past and present, to secure our freedom and democracy. The ceremony will be co-led by staff and students, and will include student art, readings, videos and the laying of wreaths.

Walden Public School
Walden Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Monday, November 11th. The ceremony will include performances from the choir as well as several classes, in English and French. The ceremony will conclude with the laying of the wreaths, the playing of “The Last Post”, a minute of silence, and “The Rouse”. Families and community members are welcome to join. The school choir has been invited by the Walden Seniors to participate in a Remembrance Day ceremony at the Cenotaph on Sixth Avenue. Students will perform “O Canada” and “Highway of Heroes” for members of the community.

Westmount Avenue Public School
Students at Westmount Avenue Public School will display their class wreaths for the community on Monday, November 11th. Students will also learn about how some special animals became war heroes.
