By Rosalind Russell – Elliot Lake city council passed a motion to accept a $3-million-dollar donation for arena repairs, agreeing to rename the Centennial Arena.

Council had agreed to rename the Centennial Arena to the Rogers Arena acknowledging the donation from Suzanne Rogers, who grew up in the city and her husband, Edwards Rogers.

Manager of Economic Development, Steve Antunes told the council the donation breaks down with $2.5 million going to the structural work and $500,000 for interior and exterior renovations.

He says the agreement also including finishing one project within the structure, which could be restroom, lobby or accessibility renovations, seating and/or the score clock.

Mayor Andrew Wannan says the donation is a great good news story not just for the arena but for the community adding everyone will benefit.

Antunes says plans are in the works for the Rogers to attend the reopening of the arena, adding no date has been finalized yet.
