By Rosalind Russell – Elliot Lake council has given approval to move forward on a community consultation to develop a tourism strategy for the city.
Manager of Economic Development, Steve Antunes asked council for its approval to spend just over $69,000 to assist in the tourism strategy with 90 percent of the cost of the study covered by a FedNor grant.
Antunes says the process includes a marketing plan to attract the ideal tourism client for the city, an assessment of the economic impact, a comparison to other similar communities for benchmarking and more.
He says 16 vendors applied with the successful applicant being Bannikin, a company that has worked in Northern Ontario and has a working knowledge of the challenges and needs of the North.
Antunes says with the approval he expects consultations to begin in the new year with three groups: residents, local businesses, and businesses with interests in Elliot Lake tourism.
He adds he hopes to see the study completed and report back to council by April 2025.
