By Rosalind Russell – Blind River has renamed their outdoor rink after a local professional hockey player.
Don and Glen ‘Bud’ MacIver are well known as the fathers of hockey in Blind River.
Mayor Sally Hagman says that in 1948, Don was a member of the Council who promoted the original Blind River indoor arena.
She says his son Bud learned hockey early, and as a teen at the Blind River Continuation School, led the school to a juvenile championship.
Throughout his life, he led the Blind River Athletics to several McGovern trophies. He would eventually play for the Sault Greyhounds and the Orillia Pontiacs eventually signing on with the Montreal Canadiens when he was 18.
She says although unfortunately, injuries prevented him from playing in the NHL, he did play in the International Hockey League for Detroit, Michigan and Louisville, Kentucky before coming home to Blind River.
She says his grandson Tyler MacIver says renaming the rink in his grandfather’s name is a great way to honour his legacy.
Bud passed away in 2023 at the age of 94.
