By Rosalind Russell – A diverse group of businesses are moving forward on a major development project at the cul-de-sac of Fox Drive in Elliot Lake.
City Economic Development Manager Steve Antunes says nine parcels of land, covering over 3.4 hectares, have been purchased by a group of businesses eager to establish their presence in the region as an economic commercial centre of business.
He says the plans include six parcels situated on one side of Fox Drive and three on the other, including AJ Bus Lines and Rose Knows Landscaping.
More announcements are expected soon says Antunes, adding the introduction of new jobs and services is anticipated to enhance the quality of life, provide increased employment opportunities and access a wider array of services that is currently lacking.
Antunes also highlighted the growing tourism industry in Elliot Lake, adding the “Our Explore Elliot Lake” website showcases the area’s abundant tourism opportunities, with the campaign aiming to rebrand Elliot Lake as a premier destination.
Last October, FedNor allocated nearly $1.7 million — $24,000 to complete the infrastructure for the Fox Drive project, and an additional $72,000 earmarked for the development of the tourism strategy.
Antunes says this funding has allowed them to engage the consulting firm Bannikin to help shape a five-year tourism plan aimed at elevating Elliot Lake’s profile compared to other destinations and identifying new tourism opportunities.
