Algoma-Manitoulin goes blue

By Rosalind Russell – Bill Rosenberg of Thessalon will represent Algoma-Manitoulin at Queens’ Park after he garnered over 41% of the vote.
Rosenberg’s win means Algoma-Manitoulin will be part of the majority government with Doug Ford’s PCs winning the province.

He was elected to Thessalon’s town council in 2014 and served as Deputy Mayor before successfully becoming Mayor in 2018, with his race focusing on economic development, improving local infrastructure, and building stronger community connections.

The NDP candidate out of Elliot Lake, David Timeriski, came in second (27.2%), while Liberal Reg Niganobe out of Mississauga First Nation was third (14.5%).

Former incumbent Mike Mantha, who ran as an Independent after being ousted by the NDP in late 2023, finished fourth (11.9%)

Province-wide, Doug Ford and the Progressive Conservatives won a third straight mandate following yesterday’s snap provincial election.

The P-Cs have won 80 ridings down from the 83 they won in 2022, but still far more than needed for a majority government.

The New Democrats also won fewer seats, at 27, but the party is still the official opposition.

The big winner was the Liberal party, jumping to 14 seats … enough to reach official party status at Queen’s Park.

Liberal leader Bonnie Crombie didn’t win her seat in Mississauga but has vowed to stay on as party leader.

The Green Party won two ridings, and one went to an independent candidate.
