By Rosalind Russell – Liberal Leader Mark Carney officially kicked off Canada’s federal election yesterday morning, visiting the Governor General to dissolve parliament and launch a 37-day campaign.
Carney, the former Bank of Canada governor, became prime minister on March 14.
He is facing challenges from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, New Democrat Jagmeet Singh, Green Party co-leaders Elizabeth May and Jonathan Pedneault, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet, and People’s Party Leader Maxime Bernier.
A new Angus Reid poll shows Carney’s Liberals surging to a five-point lead, overturning a previous three-point advantage held by Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre.
Analysts suggest the tight polling numbers mean this race could remain too close to call until the final ballots are counted on April 28.
