Anishinabek Nation reacts to Trudeau resignation

By Rosalind Russell – The Anishinabek Nation Grand Council Chief is thanking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for his commitment to First Nation issues during his time in office.

Grand Council Chief Linda Debassige from Manitoulin Island says Trudeau’s efforts to promote reconciliation, improve living conditions, tackle boil water advisory issues, and more can be – quote — viewed as some progress towards reconciliation.

She says initiatives undertaken by the Liberal government have not gone unnoticed.

However, Debassige says more tangible efforts need to be made as their communities continue to live with ongoing issues including Residential School trauma, the opioid epidemic, community safety, ongoing boil water advisories, and the housing crisis.

She also says they’re open to a collaborative relationship with any government.

Trudeau announced Monday he’s resigning as Prime Minister and Liberal leader once a new party leader is chosen.
