Grade 7 and 8 students in Rainbow Schools will participate in the Math, Science and Technology Olympics on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at Science North in Sudbury.
“Over 180 students will take part in this event, which has become a tradition for Rainbow Schools,” says Director of Education Bruce Bourget. “Students will apply what they are learning in the classroom in an enjoyable and creative way.”
He added: “We are very fortunate to have Science North in our community, where students have access to leading edge activities for hands-on learning.”
A team of dedicated teachers from Rainbow District School Board have prepared challenging questions and activities related to Science North exhibits and the curriculum.
In the morning, students will begin by answering questions to test their knowledge and skills in math, science, technology and coding, followed by a technological design challenge prepared by Science North staff in the afternoon.
“The design challenge typically involves building a structure using a variety of different materials,” says Eric Bacon, Intermediate STEM/Coding Coordinator with Rainbow District School Board. “The structure must then be used to accomplish a particular task.”
Following the challenges, educators will tally the results. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at 2:30 pm in the Vale Cavern. Parents/guardians and members of the public are welcome to attend.
All participants will receive a t-shirt with the Math, Science, and Technology Olympics logo.
Students are ready and eager for a fun day of learning in the spirit of friendly competition.
