City of Elliot Lake closing arena, delaying public consultation

By Rosalind Russell – Elliot Lake’s Acting Mayor says the city has no choice but to remove the ice from Centennial Arena, completely close the facility to the public and delay a public consultation.

Acting Mayor Andrew Wannan says the city has received a draft report from the technical engineering firm Wood Research and Development, which has identified more arena structures that are areas of concern, so more investigation will be needed to determine the extent of repairs and propose an estimated timeline.

He says city staff is working with the engineering firm to provide a comprehensive package detailing options the city can consider, and the present those findings to residents.

He adds they will be delaying a public input session for the time being.

Wannan emphasizes once the report is completed, they will schedule a public town hall meeting to address the repairs of the arena.
